Founded in 1632 by the Swedish King Gustav II Adolph, the University of Tartu is the oldest, largest university in Estonia both in terms of staff and student numbers, as well as the volume of its teaching, research and development activities. As Estonia’s only classical university , the University of Tartu embraces a wide variety of academic fields, including medicine. It offers 197 research-based graduate and postgraduate study programmes, including 27 international degree programmes fully taught in English. As of 2019, approximately 13,500 students are enrolled, including around 1,500 international students. The University belongs to the TOP 1,2% of the world’s best universities (QS World University Rankings). It accounts for more than a half of all the doctoral degrees conferred (129 in 2019), research publications (more than 3,000 articles published annually) and national R&D financing in Estonia. In recent years, the University’s researchers have exceeded Essential Science Indicators 1% impact threshold in the fields of Clinical Medicine, Chemistry, Environment & Ecology, Geosciences, Plant & Animal Science, Social Sciences, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Biology & Biochemistry, Life Sciences, Neuroscience & Behavior, Psychiatry & Psychology. The University has cooperation agreements with 80 universities in 31 countries and participates in the activities of several high-level university networks, such as the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, U4Society, and the Coimbra Group.
